Kefalonia
There are so many beautiful Greek islands, it is hard to know which to choose for your summer holiday in Greece. However, after travelling around many of them, Kefalonia has always been one of our favourites. The largest of the Ionian Islands, it varies dramatically from one end to the other; explore the pristine beaches of the south, and the vibrant capital, Argostoli which was completely rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1953. It is now a cosmopolitan town with a plethora of shops, bars and restaurants, and a charming palm-lined promenade along the seafront. There are myriad dishes for you to try in the restaurants, the range of food is fabulous from rustic to cosmopolitan, you will not be going hungry.
Wind your way north through the pine-clad mountains, whilst taking in the breath-taking coastal views over the famous beach at Myrtos and exploring the quaint villages.
Soon you will find the unspoilt gem of Assos, a small, but perfectly formed hamlet with just a handful of shops and tavernas, right on the edge of the crystal-clear Ionian waters, an idyllic choice for a holiday in Greece. Continue further north and visit the quieter beach of Agia Jerusalem until you reach Fiskardo, a sophisticated harbour town with many colourful Venetian buildings, excellent shops and restaurants, a wonderful spot to enjoy a relaxing meal whilst watching the yachts gently bobbing in the aquamarine waters.
Assos
The quaint hamlet of Assos really is nothing short of idyllic. Its small, horse-shoe shaped bay is home to just a handful of family-run waterfront tavernas, a couple of well-stocked mini-markets, making it the perfect choice for a serene holiday on the Greek Islands. Laze on the pebble beach which gently shelves into the crystal-clear, warm waters, or sip a frappe in one of the restaurants before building up the energy to stroll up to the ancient castle of Assos, which is perched majestically at the top of the peninsula that juts out opposite the town.
On the edge of the village you will find the gorgeous Braunis Horio Villas, a selection of 13 luxury villas, each with a private pool, and the most magical views over the bay, over to the castle and out to sea. These contemporary 1-3 bedroom villas are a superb choice for a relaxing holiday on the beautiful island of Kefalonia.
In the south of the island is the wonderful resort hotel, Avithos Resort. Ideally situated a short stroll from the local village of Svoronata, with its good choice of shops, bars and restaurants. A pretty harbour town, the relaxed atmosphere and slower pace of life is perfect for just sitting around and watching the world go by. The local scenery is stunning and the beaches are the stuff of dreams.
